7 Reasons To Consider Selling Your Empty Nest
The Kids Have Flown The Nest
“We really don’t need all of this space.” Have you found yourself uttering this phrase, or some iteration of it, to your husband or signficant other since your children have moved into their college dorms or even their own homes? If so, you may be experiencing empty nest syndrome and it may be time to consider selling your home.
What Is Your Why For Selling Your Home
The reasons why you want to sell your home can help determine your “next steps”. Below I have shared “7 Reasons to Sell Your Empty Nest”. Take a look and see if these resonate with you. If so, take your time, understand where you are now and begin to create a plan for the future.
If you are considering selling your home, lets set up a time to chat!
Save Money
Downsizing your house to save money is one of the most popular reasons to sell your empty nest. Consider this, your kids are all in college or out on their own; yet your are still paying your mortgage and maintaining a 4 bedroom home, with a large yard. However, it’s only maybe two of you living in the home. Your are paying for space you no longer need nor use. Downsizing your home or purchasing a home in a less expensive neighborhood or town can help you save money.
Reduce Maintenance
Quite simply, the larger the house and property, the more you must maintain. And, maintenance can be both time consuming and expensive. Consider what you can eliminate if you downsize your home: lawn and gardening care, swimming pool upkeep, and housekeeping are only a few of the things that can be reduced or sometimes even eliminated.
It is important to determine what you like about your current home, and what you would be happy (or willing) to give up. For example, if you just love laying by your pool in the beautiful Florida weather, that may not be the item to eliminate. However, maybe your pool will lie on a smaller lot, eliminating the landscaping and lawn care fees associated with your yard. Or, perhaps you would be just as happy enjoying a community pool. Make smart choices, you want to be happy in your next home
Change Your Lifestyle
Is your current home located in a quiet, family-friendly neighborhood complete with playgrounds and bus stops? Do you live in the perfect distance from your local schools? While this location was fabulous for years, you may be ready for a change.
Does living in a busier area (maybe walking distance to shops and restaurants) sound appealing? Perhaps you would like to be closer to the beach, or even on a golf course?
Consider your hobbies and your future plans. Selling your empty nest provides the opportunity to start over!
Combat Loneliness
Even if you are married, you can still be lonely. Has your neighborhood “turned over”? Are you surrounded by people significantly younger than you with different interests? If so, you may want to consider moving to an area where you can live among your peers. It may be an “over 55 community” or simply a house in an location where people closer to your age reside. Living near those whose ages and interests are similar to yours can help you meet new friends and keep busy!
Make Daily Life Easier
So many of us live in multi-story houses; for years we loved it. Perhaps the kids bedrooms, and their associated chaos was all upstairs. Maybe it was the 2nd floor master bedroom sanctuary tucked away from the main living space that you enjoyed. Consider eliminating those stairs!
An empty nest alleviates the need to escape to the upstairs; single story living can be incredibly convenient and is something to consider for the future. If your stairs or the layout of your house is becoming inconvenient, or frankly, hard to negotiate, now is the time to make a change.
Alleviate Empty Nest Syndrome
While some people relish their newly empty homes…..the order, the quiet and the calmness, others simply cannot overcome the feeling of grief they have that their children no longer live at home. If this sounds familiar, you may be suffering from empty nest syndrome. For those affected, simply walking past empty bedrooms can cause anxiety and sadness. Selling your empty nest and starting over can help put you in a better place.
Celebrate Retiring
You did it! You have worked hard for many years. You have saved and planned for your future. Now, it’s time to celebrate your retirement. Selling your home and beginning the next chapter of your life someplace new can be the perfect thing to do.
